The reason we say this is that you don’t have to do anything special to actually connect Google Home to Chromecast. Both devices are individually configured and managed through the free Google Home app (available from the App Store or Google Play), which is itself linked to your Google account. You simply give Google Home instructions as to what to do with Chromecast.

How to use Chromecast with Google Home

To stream content from Chromecast to your TV using Google Home you simply need to know which command to use. And it’s actually rather simple: “Okay Google, cast [content name] to [Chromecast name].” Google can serve up any content from YouTube provided you know the name of the video, or you can ask it for something less specific such as ‘funny videos’. In this case the command would be “Okay Google, cast funny videos to [Chromecast name].” If you ask it for a music video and have a Google Play Music account then you will have to specifically ask it to cast the video rather than the song if you want it to stream from YouTube rather than Google Play Music. So, say “Okay Google, cast [song name] video to [Chromecast name]” to get the YouTube stream, and “Okay Google, cast [song name] to [Chromecast name]” to get the Play Music stream. There are various controls you can use while the content is streaming. Try any of the following: “Okay Google, pause on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, resume on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, skip on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, stop on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, rewind [time] on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, subtitles on” or “Okay Google, subtitles off.” Google Home can also stream content from video apps such as Netflix, provided you have an account, though you’ll need to link it to your Google Home first. Open the Google Home app, tap the Settings cog, then scroll down to and select TV & video under Google Assistant services.  You should see Netflix under videos. Tap the blue Link button to connect it to Google Home. You can then use the following commands with Google Home: “Okay Google, watch [film/TV show name] from Netflix on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, next episode on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, previous episode on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, pause on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, resume on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, stop on [Chromecast name].” “Okay Google, rewind [time] on [Chromecast name].” Marie is Editor in Chief of Tech Advisor and Macworld.
